Hemel Hempstead is one of Hertfordshire's "new towns", situated a few miles north west of where the M25 and M1 cross. The River Gade runs through Hemel Hempstead and joins the Grand Union Canal on the south side of the town. The River Bulbourne also flows into Hemel and joins with the River Gade and the Grand Union Canal.
