Since University College dropped their long standing claim to have been founded by Alfred the Great in the 9th century, Merton College is recognized as the oldest college in Oxford. The idea of a self-governing community of scholars with buildings laid out in quadrangles became the model upon which all future Oxford colleges (and those in Cambridge, for that matter) would be based.
